A tie clip attaches your tie to your shirt-front, preventing the former from swinging, and making sure your tie always hangs straight. Also known as tie slides, tie bars or tie clasps, tie clips also prevent the short end of your tie poking out when it's
not meant to be seen. Both of these can be avoided by good tailoring - your suit
jacket holds your tie in plac, and most ties come with
bands to hold the smaller end in place.
Intriguingly, tie clips are one of the few items of jewellery permitted under US Army uniform regulations.
You need to be careful with tie clips (otherwise known as tie pins). A well chosen one, especially worn with a well-fitting suit, looks excellent. There is an ever-present danger of you looking like a minor member of the British royal family however.

Once again, avoid novelty here. If your tempted to get a tie clip
advertising your attendance at a particular school or university, one
word of advice. Don't.
